THE SHIRT EDIT

5

It’s my Mother’s Birthday today, and what better way to celebrate than drinking prosecco and mucking around shooting photos for a new blog post? Isn’t life just dandy.

I asked my Mum if she fancied doing this ’cause I bought her this super cool shirt-dress from Topshop as a gift. I couldn’t not write about it. It’s totally on point right now and I want to steal it all for myself. But I won’t Mum, promise…

Anyway, it looks far more fabulous on her. Sigh.

Shirts are a bit of a thing of mine. They are the staple item of clothing in my wardrobe for both work and play. The crisp white shirt is a timeless classic that can be updated with varied accessories. Add in a bit of MAC lippy, muss up your hair a bit and you have a winning combination.

I kinda always think; if I can’t find anything to wear (lolz) chuck on a shirt and heels. Because you can’t really go wrong.

Well you can. Put that Hawaiian print down now, pronto.

So lets focus back in on this Topshop shirt-dress for a moment. I’d like to draw attention to the fact that it has pockets.

YES TOPSHOP, YOU’RE GETTING IT SO RIGHT.

When Mum and I find a dress with pockets in a shop, it’s front page news. I might be over the other side of the shop but my Mum will shout:

“JADE. THIS DRESS. IT HAS FREAKIN’ POCKETS!’

We’ll then coo over the dress for quite some time, admiring its style and practicality before inevitably purchasing said dress.

Just an FYI, the A-Line shape of the dress is totally flattering on all types of shapes. It’s classy with just the right amount of sass.

HOW TO WORK YOUR SHIRT LIKE A PRO

1. Go for classic styles. If you’re going going for ultimate classic, try a crisp white shirt with red lippy for maximum impact.

2. Choose your shoes wisely. Coloured courts, embellished flats or sky high heels – your chosen footwear needs to compliment the simplicity of the shirt.

3. Work a necklace. The collar of a shirt is the perfect opportunity to put some emphasis on a statement necklace. Turn heads with a jeweled piece like this, or go for something low key with detail like this.

4. Shape & Size it right. Depending on what kind of style you’re going for, make sure you think very carefully about the shape and size of your shirt. I prefer to go for a looser size for an ‘off-duty’ look.

5. Get it in print. To jazz things up a bit, how about trying a shirt with print? I’ve just purchased a H&M Palm Print casual shirt and I can’t get enough of it. In fact, this print has gone pretty crazy in the bloggersphere scene this summer. It’s not online WAH but it’s the same print as this cute playsuit here.

6. Roll your sleeves up. Again, important for that ‘off-duty’ look.

7. Tuck it in, wear it out. If you feel like your shirt is drowning you a bit, tuck a tiny bit in one side to give you some shape. Alternatively, the billowing shirt can be a good look. It’s the one I opt for.

Happy Birthday Mum, you absolute babe. I hope I have legs like that at your age.
